Sugar Loaf Gateway Garden

The Gateway Garden was established many years ago by Nina Hempworth and has been managed by individual volunteers since it’s inception.

.

In the past two years Susan & I have been collaborating on transforming the location into a “Rain River Garden” to hold rainwater with a seres of swales and berms. We have focused on making sure all the newly introduced plants are true natives to this region. These plants will evolve & flourish in our changing seasons and climate. They are also crucial in helping to sustain our local pollinators, including bees, butterflies & birds.

.

The Sugarloaf Fire Department has been helping us during extended dry spells by bringing in substantial amounts of water, from time to time, to deep water the garden. Filling the swales not only provides water needed as the plants get established, it also lets us see if the swales and berms are functioning properly during a large rain event. The fire department benefits as well as the exercise provides hands-on training for new firefighters to learn how to control and manage fire hoses. We are immensely grateful for their involvement.

.

We would love to hear from anyone interested in working with us to help keep the weeds under control etc.

.

Please feel free to contact us via text: (or at  RainRiverGardens.com) not sure if you want to include this but it is another way to get in touch..
